Heat Pumps, Solar Panels & Smart Homes in South London & Surrey

Excel Construction designs and builds low-energy homes. We install air source heat pumps, solar PV with battery storage, external wall insulation and hardwired smart home systems as part of new builds, extensions and full refurbishments, so the technology is planned into the building from the start instead of added on afterwards.

What we install

One contractor for the building work and the energy systems. Our in-house team handles the structure, insulation, pipework and wiring, and our MCS certified, Gas Safe and NICEIC registered contractors install, certify and commission the equipment.

Heating

Air source heat pumps

Low-carbon heating and hot water to replace a gas boiler, or to heat a new-build home from day one.

  • Daikin Altherma and Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan systems
  • Installed by MCS certified, manufacturer approved contractors
  • Designed with underfloor heating or correctly sized radiators
  • Unvented hot water cylinders, certified and notified to building control
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant applications for eligible homes

Electricity

Solar PV & battery storage

Generate your own electricity and store it for the evening.

  • MCS accredited solar PV design and installation
  • High-efficiency black panels with hybrid inverters and optimisers
  • Battery storage, expandable as your needs grow
  • MCS certificate and 10-year installation warranty
  • Roof work, scaffolding and electrics handled by one team

Control

Smart homes & smart lighting

Hardwired home automation from Baulogic, built on the international KNX standard.

  • Lighting, heating, blinds and security on one system
  • Wired network that keeps working without Wi-Fi
  • Fitted at first fix, while walls and ceilings are open
  • Wall-mounted touch panel for rooms, lighting, heating, CCTV, intercom, sensors and energy
  • Ideal for new builds, basements and whole-house refurbishments

Fabric first

External wall insulation & render

Insulating the walls first means a smaller, cheaper heat pump and lower bills.

  • Insulated render systems (EWI) bonded and mechanically fixed to existing masonry
  • EPS insulation boards, typically 90mm, with mesh-reinforced base coat
  • Silicone or monocouche render finish in your choice of colour
  • U-value calculation and condensation risk analysis before work starts
  • Manufacturer-specified systems with a 10-year system warranty
  • Insulation and render can qualify for 0% VAT as energy-saving materials

Why fit renewables during your build

A heat pump or smart home works best when the house is designed around it. Because we build the house as well as install the systems, everything is coordinated on site by one team.

  1. DesignHeat loss, insulation, emitters and cylinder space are planned before work starts, so the heat pump is sized correctly.
  2. BuildPipework, underfloor heating, cabling and roof fixings go in during the structural and first-fix stages, with no chasing out later.
  3. Install & commissionRegistered contractors install, test and commission each system to the manufacturer's standards.
  4. Certify & hand overYou receive MCS, Building Regulations and compliance certificates, and we show you how everything works.

Featured project

Lancaster Close, Bromley: insulation, heat pump, solar PV and smart home

A 223 m² detached house wrapped in 90mm external wall insulation with a silicone render finish, then fitted with an air source heat pump feeding underfloor heating and radiators, solar PV, and a Baulogic KNX smart home system controlling heating zones, lighting, CCTV, intercom, sensors and energy from a wall-mounted touch panel. The heat pump was funded in part by a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant approved by Ofgem. Before work started, a U-value calculation and condensation risk analysis were carried out: the insulated walls achieve a calculated U-value of 0.30 W/m²K, the Building Regulations standard for upgraded walls, with no condensation risk at any layer.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant, run by Ofgem, towards the cost of replacing a fossil-fuel boiler with a heat pump in England and Wales. The grant is paid to your installer and taken off your bill.

Only MCS certified installers can apply. Our heat pump contractors are MCS certified and have had applications approved by Ofgem, so we can check your eligibility and handle the application as part of the job.

Typical eligibility

  • You own the property in England or Wales, including second homes and rented properties
  • The heat pump replaces an existing fossil-fuel system, such as gas, oil, LPG or electric heating
  • Most new-build homes are not eligible
  • The system is installed by an MCS certified installer

Rules and grant amounts are set by the government and can change. See GOV.UK for the current scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install a heat pump as part of my extension or refurbishment?

Yes. Most of our heat pump installations are part of a wider building project. Fitting one during an extension, loft conversion or full refurbishment lets us add insulation, underfloor heating or larger radiators and cylinder space at the same time, which makes the system more efficient and cheaper to run.

Do I need planning permission for an air source heat pump?

In most houses in England an air source heat pump is permitted development, as long as it meets the noise and siting conditions. Flats, listed buildings and some conservation areas may need consent. We check this for you at design stage.

Can you add external wall insulation to an existing house?

Yes. We fit insulated render systems to existing brick and block walls: insulation boards are bonded and mechanically fixed to the wall, reinforced with a meshed base coat and finished in silicone or monocouche render. It cuts heat loss through the walls without losing any room space, and is often the first step before fitting a heat pump.

Does a heat pump work with underfloor heating?

Yes, very well. Heat pumps are most efficient at low flow temperatures, which is exactly how underfloor heating runs. Correctly sized radiators also work well.

Which heat pump brands do you install?

We install Daikin Altherma and Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan air source heat pumps through MCS certified contractors approved by both manufacturers.

Is solar with a battery worth it?

A battery stores the electricity your panels generate during the day so you can use it in the evening, and can also charge on cheaper off-peak tariffs. It is especially useful alongside a heat pump or an electric car. We size the system to your roof and your energy use.

What is a KNX smart home?

KNX is an international standard for wired home automation. A Baulogic KNX system controls lighting, heating, blinds and security from switches, an app or schedules, and does not depend on Wi-Fi. Because it is wired, it is best installed at first fix during a new build or refurbishment.

Which areas do you cover?

We work across South London and Surrey, including Croydon, Bromley, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Merton and Sutton. See our credentials for our insurance, warranties and registrations.
